Grand music in a tiny village
The World Heritage Site is a unique setting for big encounters with art and culture, and our little village Geiranger is the holder of proud traditions of culture. “Festspela” in Geiranger aims to be a regional lighthouse for the distribution of art and culture of a high quality, and at the same time be an ambassador for local distinctiveness. Food culture is an important part of our festival concept, as is the nature that surrounds us. There will be concerts out on the fjord and up on the mountain, 1500 meters above sea level - and everything in between. The audience will share in the intimate performances, as well as with nature, and the village. We believe these diverse, grand musical encounters create togetherness, expand horizons, and help ourselves and communities develop and grow.
The work to establish a festival in Geiranger started in 2019. In spite of the covid pandemic, the first Festspela in 2021 was a success. We were happy to have a ‘soldout’ series of concerts, and have satisfied audience members from all over the country. It is in the name ‘festspel’, that it is a party - a celebration where we want everyone to be able to take part. An important goal for us is to make classical music accessible to everyone, and be held in non-traditional concert venues that remove barriers to enjoy new cultural experiences.
Festspela in Geiranger is led by a working board and a program council:
